About
Who I am
Photography
In 1985 I went on my first safari to Tanzania, and the Serengeti did exactly what everyone promises it will - it got under my skin completely. But I came home with more than photos and memories: on that same trip I met the woman who would become my wife. She's Tanzanian, and we're still together today, which explains why I've been back to Tanzania more times than I can count. Together, we've since travelled to many other parts of the world too.
It took until 2010, on a trip to the Galapagos, to learn a harder lesson: even when an animal posed patiently right in front of me, some of my photos still weren't sharp. So it wasn't me - it was my gear. Since then I've built up a serious collection of high-quality Canon lenses, and my wildlife photography has improved enormously.
In the field
My approach starts with seeking out special locations and situations that go beyond the everyday. From there it's mostly patience - often waiting for hours for that one magical moment, and to some extent you have to make your own luck. I spend a lot of time studying animal behaviour, learning to predict what's about to happen so I can be ready for it. Knowledge of, and respect for, your subject is essential. And whatever the shot, I make sure I never disturb the animals or their environment to get it.
Photo safari guiding
I guide photo safaris, sharing what I've learned about nature, technique, composition and light along the way. Whether you're just starting out or looking to take your wildlife photography further, I can help you get more out of being in the field - recognising the right moment, understanding the animals around you, and coming home with images you're proud of.
